This summer the Emergency Response and Rescue Corps was busy conducting underwater clean-up activities in several touristic beaches around Gozo and Comino. Beaches included Ramla Bay, Mgarr X-Xini, Hondoq Bay, Dwejra, Marsalforn in Gozo and Blue Lagoon in Comino. A number of volunteers from the Emergency Response and Rescue Corps used scuba gear equipment to search and recover rubbish from the sea bed.
During the clean ups large amounts of rubbish were recovered, that unfortunately, was thrown negligently into the sea. There were empty plastic and glass bottles, aluminum cans, paper, clothes, damaged umbrellas and car tyres. All rubbish was segregated and disposed of in the several bring in sites in Gozo.
The underwater clean-up project was possible with the financial aid from the Be Active Scheme promoted by Agenzija Zaghzagh.
